Abstract

A field survey was conducted in the El-Hodna (M'Sila province) and Bibans (Bordj Bou Arreridj province) regions of northeastern Algeria between 2009 and 2015 and supplemented by additional field and laboratory research from 2017 to 2019, Sticky traps placed in domestic animal shelters across 33 stations yielded a total of 1,782 phlebotomine sand fly specimens belonging to 14 species in two genera, Phlebotomus (8 species) and Sergentomyia (6 species), representing 66.6% of the recorded Algerian fauna. Ecological diversity was quantified using the Shannon-Weaver (H'), Simpson (D), and evenness (E) indices. The Hutcheson t-test revealed significantly higher diversity in El-Hodna (H' = 2.34) than in the Bibans (H' = 1.97; t = 2.41, df = 743, p = 0.016), reflecting greater equitability (E = 0.67 vs. 0.54) despite lower species richness (S = 11 vs. 13). Chi-squared analysis confirmed highly significant compositional differences between regions (χ² = 310.4, df = 13, p < 0.0001). Mann-Whitney U tests (Bonferroni-corrected α = 0.0036) identified Phlebotomus perniciosus, P. papatasi, and P. longicuspis as significantly differentially abundant. Spearman altitude correlations revealed contrasting habitat affinities: P. perniciosus (ρ = +0.52) was associated with higher elevations, while P. papatasi (ρ = −0.44) was linked to lower steppe zones. Chao1 estimates confirmed near-complete inventories (> 93% completeness). Three primary leishmaniasis vectors — P. papatasi, P. sergenti (confirmed host of Leishmania killicki in Algeria; Boubidi et al., 2011), and P. perniciosus — were confirmed sympatric in both regions, indicating simultaneous multi-form leishmaniasis transmission risk.
