Abstract

Superorm (Zophobas morio) larvae have high nutritional value, but the cost of standard diets is an obstacle to their mass production. This study aimed to reduce production costs by replacing the common diet with inexpensive wastes of tomato pomace and corn vinasse. Five diets, including the standard diet and four waste-based treatments: T1: 50% rice bran + 50% tomato pomace; T2: 50% wheat bran + 50% tomato pomace; T3: 100% tomato pomace; and T4: 80% tomato pomace + 20% corn vinasse, were evaluated on larvae of ages 3 to 5. Growth indices, carcass composition, and growth stages were evaluated by sex. Treatment T2 showed the best performance with the highest final larval weight of males 0.818 g and females 0.808 g (compared to control: 0.817 and 0.725 g), the best feed conversion ratio (6.07) and the shortest growth period and fully competed with the control diet. Larval protein content remained high in all treatments and ranged from 59.16–63.55%, while high-fiber diets (T3 and T4) resulted in a significant reduction in carcass fat to 22.59% (compared to 38.63% in the control). Sex-segregation studies showed that females matured earlier than males (18.53 days versus 20.71 days in the control). Survival rates were above 89% in all treatments. Replacing standard diets with wastes, especially the T2 treatment, significantly reduces production costs while maintaining biological performance and nutritional value, and provides a sustainable solution for organic waste management and industrial production of insect protein.
